Driving in Los Cabos is quite the experience, especially if you are aware of the basic driving tips. Countless numbers of visitors drive around in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo every year, some drive their own vehicle across the border and others by flying down and then renting a car (US & other foreign rental cars are not permitted in Mexico). Although taxis are a very common way to travel short distances while in Cabo, there is nothing like the freedom of having a your own car and agenda to explore what Los Cabos has to offer.
In all of Mexico and Los Cabos speed limits are posted in kilometers per hour (Kmph) not miles per hour (Mph) as in the United States. An easy formula to calculate the difference between Kmph and Mph is to take the kilometers per hour posted, multiply it by six (6) and then drop the last digit. 100 kilometers per hour equals approximately 60 miles per hour.
If you are pulled over and ticketed for a driving violation anywhere in Los Cabos you have the right to ask for and be issued a traffic ticket which can be paid at the police station or my mail. Police officers are not legally allowed to receive payment for violations (or bribes), but the age old ritual of 'mordida' still prevails in many parts of Mexico.
The Puerto Los Cabos Marina occupies a spot once frequented by treasure galleons and the pirate ships that lay in wait for them. Now a sought after destination for world-class sport fishing, the area is a living connection between Los Cabos' maritime past and future. This picturesque gem of a marina, surrounded by a collection of fine art sculptures that will surprise and thrill you, is the quieter, more sophisticated of the two marinas in Los Cabos. One of the largest privately held marinas in all of Mexico, the Puerto Los Cabos Marina will host over 400 yachts and provide a multitude of reasons for getting out on the open sea, including its very own open water dolphin swim program. In addition to the famed deep sea fishing, gray and humpback whales return every winter to calve and to mate and can often be seen within minutes of leaving the docks.
